Canicross is the sport of cross country running with your dog. It is a great way to keep you and your dog fit, whilst creating a special bond between you.
Specially designed kit allows you and your dog to run safely, naturally and hands free.
I am a Dogfit Certified Trainer and offer a range of services from taster sessions for complete beginners, right through to the longer social runs.
I specialise in working on a 1:1 basis and have extensive experience of working with dogs who are reactive, anxious, nervous, those with high energy and excitable, or those with behavioural issues.
Canicross is perfect if you are short on time and struggle to find the time to exercise AND walk your dog!

Most dog breeds are suitable for canicross training but there are some breeds that aren't. The tiny toy dogs won't be able to keep up, whilst the larger giant breeds are prone to bone damage and running would exacerbate this. The short-nosed breeds may be ok for a little jog but it would be dangerous for them when exerting themselves as they may struggle to breathe.
Dogs need to be a minimum of 12 months old, or when they stop growing (which can be more than 12 months for some breeds - always check with your vet if you are unsure). This is because growth plates are still forming in young dogs.
Older dogs can still participate in canicross but may be suited to shorter runs, or a combination of run / walk intervals.
Yes, absolutely! Reactive dogs are typically very intelligent and sensitive, and they can easily become bored. They require careful handling to navigate life and find a purpose. Canicross training provides this sense of purpose and a 'job' for them to do. Often, reactive or overly boisterous dogs need a safe space to run around in if they are to be let off lead—canicross running programs offer an excellent opportunity for energetic exercise to take place while keeping them safe.
In addition to your running attire, which should include a pair of off-road trainers, you'll need three essential items for canicross training: a waist belt for yourself, a harness for your dog, and a bungee line. These are crucial components for effective running programs that involve your canine partner.
Our canicross training taster sessions include complimentary hire of the waist belt, harness, and bungee line.
Any level of fitness is fine, but just as you would need to start slowly and build up, so does your dog. If you and your dog are new to fitness, our Couch to 5k program, which is perfect for canicross training, is ideal for getting started with running programs together.
Many walking harnesses are designed to stop a dog from pulling, while running harnesses are tailored to support pulling forward, especially during canicross training. Dogs will quickly learn to differentiate between canicross equipment and other gear through their association with specific activities, commands, cues, and positive reinforcement, which is crucial for successful running programs.
In the hot summer months, canicross training sessions can continue but only take place in the early morning, depending on temperatures and humidity. Additionally, running programs can still proceed on rainy days, provided that conditions underfoot are deemed safe (i.e., not slippery, etc.).
